At Blackhawk on the River

McCall has long been a spectacular area for skiing and the area now boasts three alpine ski areas, miles of groomed Nordic trail systems, and an amazing, accessible backcountry. The ski season typically lasts from mid-November to mid-April, with deeper snowpacks than you find in Vail, Aspen or Sun Valley.

Our 12 kilometers of groomed Nordic ski trails weave through 500 acres of protected open space, including our 364-acre Wildlife Preserve. Set along the Payette River, you’ll enjoy mountain views and plenty of wildlife, as well as the comfort of warming shelters placed along the trail.

Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding

McCall is home to two major ski resorts, Tamarack Resort and Brundage Mountain, and located nearby the family-friendly Little Ski Hill. The three resorts offer a total of 2,440 acres of lift-served terrain, over 5,000 feet of vertical drop, several terrain parks, and crowd-free expert, intermediate and beginner runs.

Nordic Skiing

Several groomed Nordic trail systems are located in or near McCall and you can access all of them for a season pass that puts you in the middle of over 100km of groomed trails. Ponderosa State Park sits on a 1,000-acre peninsula on Payette Lake, and is a popular winter destination for Nordic skiers, with 11 miles of groomed trails and outstanding views of the lake, the town, and the surrounding forest. Jug Mountain Ranch also offers approximately 11 miles of groomed trails designed by Lyle Nelson, a McCall native and four-time Olympic biathlete.

The area ski resorts, including Little Ski Hill and Tamarack Resort, maintain Nordic trails. The Little Ski Hill’s Bear Basin has more than 30 miles of groomed trails with a 5-kilometer dog loop. Tamarack’s 20 kilometers of machine groomed trails traverse a wide variety of terrain, with scenic viewpoints, open meadows and forests. Seven kilometers of dog-friendly trails are also available. The Activity Barn offers approximately seven miles of pet-friendly, groomed trails as well as lift-served snow tubing.

Backcountry Adventures

McCall is surrounded by federal and state public land, and skiers of all abilities have easy access to a wide variety of terrain from almost anywhere in the valley. Jughandle Mountain, a prominent peak on the east side of Long Valley, is a popular destination for backcountry skiers. And a lift ride to the top of Brundage Mountain opens up access to Sargeants Mountain and Double North. Brundage Mountain also offers guided backcountry skiing by snow cat.
